The seat previously held by Caroline Lucas was defended and the party’s three other targets were all gained, so there are now four Green MPs in the new parliament:

The Green vote doubled to a record high in a general election of 7%. Green Party candidates came second in 39 seats: 4 in Bristol, 18 in London, 3 in Manchester, 3 in Sheffield, 2 in Leeds, 2 in Liverpool, as well as in Birkenhead, Cardiff South, Hove and Portslade, Huddersfield, Norwich South, Nottingham East and Oxford East.

Well done all for standing and allowing voters to show their support for a green future.

Overall, the result again showed how the first past the post election system unfairly allocates seats to each party. This time, Labour gained more seats than justified by their share of support across the country and Reform and Greens won less than their fair share. A proportional representation system continues to be needed in the UK, as is provided in most other developed and democratic countries.
